Oskarisms

My 4yo son has this amazing memory. Basically he remembers everything he hears and all that goes on around him and has since he was about two. This can often be rather cute, but it can also be a bit embarrassing… like the time he repeated a little tidbit of information to a playmate that he had overheard me say about that playmate’s parent. Yeah, that was embarrassing.

But it can also be very cute as he often comes out with some hilarious Oskarisms as I like to call them. Some of the funnier ones in the last little bit have been related to TV. He and I have been watching more TV than I would like lately because I spend a good portion of the afternoon sitting down nursing the baby. I quickly discovered that HGTV (Home and Garden Television) was a good channel for us to watch together as I love to check out all the cool decor stuff and Oskar (my 4yo) loves all the building.

I didn’t realize how much he was paying attention to HGTV until he started rattling off brand name home goods like Delta, Moen and Kohler. We will be in a public washroom and he will knowingly peer at the toilet or the tap and say: yup… I knew it was Delta or that toilet is a Kohler Mom!! The best was when he spied a Moen insignia and very wisely stated: Moen… buy it for looks buy it for life Mom. I seriosuly laughed my ass off when he said that because my son was like a walking, talking slogan machine (also a little disturbing hence the picture on this post).

Today he once again proved to me how much adverting he is absorbing when he asked me to sing a song from a certain commercial he kept seeing during the hockey game we watched the other night. I have already blogged before about the inappropriate commercials sometimes played during sports games and so we have been limiting the amount he watches but it is playoffs so we have let him watch a bit (naughty mommy).

So the song he asked me to sing him was from a commercial for a very well known prescription drug. Luckily, he has no idea what the commercial is for but he sure loves the song. Have a listen… do you like the song or maybe you’ve tried the drug?? Not me… we’re not that adventurous round here ;) .

This post made me laugh. My son is like your Oscar. We don’t watch a lot of TV, but boy does he remember the commercials. Once, my husband caught him admiring a shampoo at the grocery store. My husband asked what he was doing and son just started rattling off the commercial lines. Too funny.

They soak it all in. It makes me cringe how often he is marketed to in a day!

A kid after my own heart. When I was younger (small enough to sit in a grocery cart), my parents say I would sing the jingles for products I saw on the shelves. And I knew a lot of them.

I can still recite commercial jingles from my childhood. Life Brand Cereal… don’t worry, your kids will eat it! )

Emmit has been watching playoffs too, and loves that ad! But it’s more because he is obsessed with tap dancing right now, and we’ve been watching scenes from Singin’ in the Rain on Youtube, so he thinks it’s hysterical to see the song in a different scene :)

That is too funny! Ken and I both laughed about the fixture comments. I had to call him in to hear it.

It’s a scary thought that they pick up so much, but it’s also very amusing.

This is AMAZING! I just totally cracked up. Oskar reminds me of my little sister when she was his age. For some reason, she took a strange liking to the Real Estate Chanel (the one that shows home listings). We’d be driving down a street and she’d say stuff like “Mom, that’s a house that Dino’s selling. I heard it has a rustic backyard”.
