You’re Just a Crazy Mommy

He Wasn't That Sick Huh?

It was Sunday afternoon and my 11 -Month-Old was not doing so well. His breathing was shallow, he was lethargic and he was way too sleepy. So, I scooped him up and hauled him off to the Walk-In-Clinic at our Doctor’s office.

We got in right away and he saw a clinic doctor who quickly looked him over and decided he was fine and just needed to let it “run its course”. I asked about his breathing and the Doctor didn’t have much to say about it. As I was leaving the exam room I turned to him and said “I just did not want to be negligent or anything.” He looked at my with that look. If you are a Mother you know the one, it’s the: Ok, I have a  Crazy, Hyper-Paranoid Mommy on my hands looks and responded with a sarcastic: “nobody would think you were negligent”. He then went on his merry way.

We however, did not go on our merry way. Over the next two days my little guy continued to struggle with his breathing and was barely awake for more than an hour at a time. Yesterday afternoon my mommy senses were tingling and I thought enough was enough and took him to the ER.
It’s a good thing I did because the kid’s oxygen level was in the freakin toilet; he was struggling to breath just like I thought and he was suffering big time because of it. He was admitted and we are now in for a few days of treatment in the Peds unit of our local hospital.
Everyone here has been really wonderful and with some much needed support (oxygen, IV, and some medications) he is already perking up. I am very glad I listened to my mommy instincts yesterday.

But seriously WTF was up with that clinic doctor!!
It was a good lesson for me to learn. I know my kid and I know when he is really sick. Next time I am following my instincts and bringing him into the ER ASAP.

If there are typos in this post please forgive me. I have not slept in the last 24 hours and I am running on coffee and pure adrenaline here.

Please do trust those Mommy instincts! They are so much more astute than clinic doctors…. I hate to say it, but we so often see patients in the ER who have been sent home from the clinic with legitimate illnesses. I hope you guys are doing well, and wish your little one a speedy recovery!

Just another notch in my Mommy belt. Thanks for the support guys!! Frew is actually our nurse today so that feels really nice. Sometimes Victoria feels like a little neighbourhood =).

I hate to stress the emergency room but next time if I can't get in with my family doctor I am just going straight to the ER.

That is so frustrating about the clinic doctor. I have to say, it's one of the reasons we went with a midwife for this pregnancy. I have never had a good experience with doctors (which isn't to say there aren't great doctors out there!!). I am always told to "Keep an eye on it and come back if it gets worse". Sounds like your clinic doctor has been talking to any doctor I've seen…
I'm happy to hear that the doctors and nurses at the hospital are so much better.
And I'm happier to hear that Angus is on the mend.

Yes, always listen to your own instinct. Serves me well all the time. So glad to hear your little one is doing better. Must be hard to see him so ill.

Please try to pump or hand-express, especially if you still want to continue to breastfeed, and ideally give him/have them give him the expressed milk. Or try to nurse him there whenever possible. I had to stop once for two weeks, hand-expressed for that time, and continued without a problem. I wrote a few blog posts about it (search "wounds"). Good luck!
