To Tweet or Not to Tweet

On May 3rd, 2009 I took the plunge and opened my Twitter account. I have to admit, my Twitter initiation was a calculated move that involved research and forethought. In other words, I did not just fly into the Twitisphere without a flight plan.

In early Spring, it seemed impossible to watch TV or go online and not hear some sort of buzz regarding Twitter. I have to admit, this consistent buzz played right into one of my greatest fears: becoming a technological dinosaur. So, in an attempt to stay current, I began to look into Twitter. I did some research and learned there was a great deal of Twitiquette. Yes, like any civilized community or forum, Twitter has etiquette.

At first the whole thing was a bit intimidating and I doubted I would really get into it. As an avid Facebook user, I found it difficult to see how Twitter would benefit my life. What exactly was I going to get out of this whole experiment? Why should I use Twitter when I already used Facebook? I was skeptical and in the beginning I almost gave up. Looking back at my original posts or MicroBlogs, I have to laugh. I really could not shake my Facebookism and started all my posts with Is. For example: Is trying to convince Oskar to get dressed so we can go out. Ummm Hello: No one on here knows who Oskar (my son) is and why are you starting your posts with is??

But slowly I got into the swing of things and began to follow people and be followed back. Unlike Facebook, my Twitter friends or Tweeple are mostly all strangers. They are people who have similar interests to me: A guy from London that likes Metric, a mother from NY who adores cloth diapers, a woman who like me, has a little Robert Pattinson obsession (aka Robsession). Twitter is very addictive and I was shocked by how often I posted and continue to post. In fact, just today I reached my 300th update! I have to admit, I often Tweet in my head; as a stay at home mom, Twitter is often my only outlet for expressing adult thoughts.

I am serious when I say that I have learned new things on Twitter, especially when it comes to cloth diapering. I am really into cloth diapering and have been doing it almost exclusively for over two years. Lucky for me, there is a great big cloth diapering Mommy community out there on Twitter. We even got #clothdiapers into the trending topics a few weeks ago (I don’t expect you to understand what the # means or trending topics thing unless you Twitter).

My ultimate Twitter Victory came yesterday when, because of Twitter, I knew that the Sedin twins were signed to a new contract with Vancouver before my Canuck obsessed Hubby did! That’s Twitter for you, within seconds you can know the most up-to-date news. So if you like new things and have the time to indulge, you may want to give Twitter a try. Who knows, you may even get hooked just like I have.
